Tweeddale inherited the area of the traditional county of Peeblesshire. The main settlements were Peebles, Innerleithen and West Linton. It was bordered on the north by the districts of West Lothian, City of Edinburgh and Midlothian, all in Lothian Region; on the east by Ettrick and Lauderdale, a district of Scottish Borders; on the south by Annandale & Eskdale in Dumfries & Galloway; and on the west by Clydesdale in Strathclyde.
