Lochgilphead - Lochgilphead is a sleepy little place at the head of Loch Gilp, a short loch leading north west from Loch Fyne. Lochgilphead's position became important with the opening of the Crinan Canal in 1801 providing a short cut across the Kintyre peninsula. Today it serves as a useful base for exploring the area, with a decent range of accommodation, a bank and supermarket.
