Accessible Holidays in Lanzarote

The Lanzarote government initiated an island-wide initiative to enhance and emphasise Lanzarote's rural accommodation and signposted walks, and now appeals to a far wider range of tourists. Like all the Canary Islands, most of the disabled holiday accommodation is set right on the coast with good access to lovely sandy beaches and a wide range of local attractions and facilities. Many of the beaches have received the blueflag award.

About Disabled Holidays in Lanzarote

For many, Lanzarote's biggest attraction is the beach and the gorgeous climate, gifted to the region by its location just 70 miles from the Saharan coast. Long stretches of glorious golden sand stretch on for miles, dotted with beachfront cafes and restaurants. Lanzarote enjoys more sunshine and lower rainfall than any of the other islands, due in part to the influence of the Gulf Stream and favourable trade winds. Average daytime temperatures range from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August. This makes Lanzarote the perfect year-round destination for accessible holidays abroad. Local authority regulations on the amount and style of development mean that there is no billboard advertising and no high rise buildings in Lanzarote (with the exception of the Arrecife Gran Hotel).

Lanzarote is a Unesco biosphere reserve, and its 13 natural reserves make up 41% of the land mass. The island's volcanic origins form a truly unique landscape that gives the island an almost lunar appearance, something which helped christen Lanzarote with its nickname, "The Island of Fire". There are numerous days out to enjoy on Lanzarote, with the Timanfaya National Park offering enviable views of the Fire Mountains, while the Valley of a Thousand Palms at Haria is one of the lushest spots on the island. Several water parks, such as the Aquapark Costa Teguise and the Aqualava Waterpark are accessible with a wheelchair, and off-road buggy and roadster tours suitable for disabled people are available, to see the island's history first hand.

As with the other Canarian islands, Lanzarote has plenty of delightful restaurants to sample and relish, from traditional dishes to a wide array of tapas and fantastic seafood. The cafes and eateries can cater for every budget, with much of the food being similar to that of southern Spain.

Lanzarote is one of the most popular island holidays of the Canaries. There are three main resorts to choose from: Puerto del Carmen is closest to Arrecife airport and enjoys over three miles of long, sandy beaches. Costa Teguise is in the north of the island, has a rocky coastline and a delightful town square in Pueblo Marinero. Playa Blanca is on the southern tip, consists of villas and bungalows and has beautiful beaches.
